Dr. Joshua Stefanik

Principal Investigator

Dr. Stefanik is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences. Prior to coming to Northeastern Dr. Stefanik was an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. He received his M.S. in Physical Therapy from Northeastern and his PhD in Anatomy and Neurobiology from Boston University School of Medicine where he also did a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology. Dr. Stefanik’s primary research interests are in the field of knee (patellofemoral joint) osteoarthritis, knee pain, and lower extremity biomechanics. He uses both Epidemiologic and three-dimensional motion capture methods in his laboratory. His ultimate goal is to develop novel and effective rehabilitation interventions for older individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

Dr. Chun-Hao (Philip) Huang

Dr. Chun-Hao (Philip) Huang

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Dr. Huang received his B.S. in Sports Medicine from Kaohsiung Medical University (Taiwan), Master degree in Biokinesiology from the University of Southern California, and his PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before coming to Northeastern, he studied the influence of gait Impairments on the efficiency of gait in people with hip osteoarthritis (OA). Dr. Huang is interested in mechanisms of disability for aging adults with musculoskeletal injuries, with the goal of developing intervention strategies to improve physical function and increase physical activity in people with OA. Dr. Huang is also an American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer.

Ph.D. Student

Khara is a PhD student in the Human Movement and Rehabilitation Science Program. She received her BS and MS degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in Exercise Science and Health, Physical Activity, and Chronic Disease. Khara’s research interests include physical activity and sedentary behavior as they relate to maximizing function in aging adults with musculoskeletal pathologies.

Corey is a PhD student in the Human Movement and Rehabilitation Science Program. He graduated with a BS in Athletic Training from Northeastern University and received a MS in Athletic Training from Illinois State University. Corey is interested in further understanding the long-term impacts of athletic injuries on health and quality of life.

Yuxuan (Jerry) Wang

Yuxuan (Jerry) Wang

Ph.D. Student

Jerry is a Ph.D. student in the Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences program. He received his BS in Human Biology from the University of Southern California and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Duke University. Jerry is interested in investigating critical factors that impact the quality of care and outcomes in patients with OA.

Michael Nguyen

Michael Nguyen

Lab Manager

Michael received his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Wichita State University. Passionate about preventative care and human movement, he aims to address the need of more personalized rehabilitation/training to recover quicker and to stay healthy longer through the use of motion capture. Michael looks forward to continuing his education in the near future with a focus in biomechanics.

Blake Karavas

Research Assistant

Blake is a Ph.D. student in Biology at Northeastern University. He graduated with a B.S. in Biochemistry and minors in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from Northeastern University, and is an American College of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer. His background and passions revolve around preventative care and treatment of movement disorders. Research interests include using motion capture to improve biomechanics and reduce the risk of injury and osteoarthritis in active and sedentary patient populations.

Dr. Sandra Shefelbine

Dr. Shefelbine is a Professor in the Bioengineering and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. She received an MPhil from Cambridge University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Shefelbine’s research interests include musculoskeletal mechanoadaptation, Advanced skeletal technologies, and multiscale mechanics of bone.

Dr. Eric Folmar

Dr. Eric Folmar

Eric is the Associate Department Chair and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Sciences Department..  He received his Bachelors in Health Sciences and Master of Physical Therapy degrees from Quinnipiac University and his Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Northeastern University.  Eric currently practices in an outpatient orthopedic setting and is a certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.  His research interests lower extremity biomechanics, chronic ankle sprains, patellofemoral pain, and clinical treatment techniques (primarily taping techniques).

Dr. Patrick Corrigan

Dr. Corrigan recently joined the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training at Sant Louis University as Assistant Professor. Dr. Corrigan received his B.S. in Exercise Science from Miami University (Ohio), Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Dayton, and his PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science from the University of Delaware. Before coming to Northeastern, he studied Achilles tendon injuries with techniques ranging from 3D motion analysis to diagnostic imaging. Dr. Corrigan is interested in mechanisms of disability for aging adults with musculoskeletal injuries, with the goal of developing rehabilitation strategies that maximize physical function, physical activity, and quality of life.

Daniela Buchbinder

Daniela is a fourth year Health Science student at Northeastern University and worked as part of the research team for her first co-op. Outside of the lab, she is a member of Northeastern’s Women’s Powerlifting team, on the executive board of Northeastern’s American Medical Women’s Association, and volunteers with Jewish Big Brother Big Sister. Daniela is interested in pursuing a career in sports medicine and will be applying to medical school in the upcoming year.

Sebastian is a third year Biology major at Northeastern University. He is currently completing his first co-op at the Northeastern’s Musculoskeletal Epidemiology and Biomechanics Lab. At Northeastern, Sebastian is a General Officer for the Biology Club. He is presently studying for the MCAT. Sebastian plans to take the MCAT in Spring of 2022 to apply for Medical School in the summer of that year. Sebastian is very enthusiastic to continue working with human participants at the lab and hopes to build a foundation on research before moving onto Medical School.

Narain Badhey

Narain Badhey

Narain Badhey recently graduated from Northeastern with a B.S. in health science and a minor in business administration. Narain is currently enrolled at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic medicine and plans to pursue a career in clinical and academic medicine as a physician. His research interests lie in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine with a focus on developing novel and effective biotechnology rehabilitation strategies.

Aubrie Sanchez

Aubrie Sanchez

Aubrie is a PhD student at The Ohio State University’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and a member of the Injury Biomechanics Research Center in the Skeletal Biology Research Laboratory. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Boston University, a M.P.H. from Northeastern University, and a M.S. in Forensic Anthropology from Boston University School of Medicine. Her research interests include skeletal biology, anatomy, biological/forensic anthropology, biomechanics, and public health, and previous research projects include the investigation of orthopedic pathologies and their effect on the prevalence of hip osteoarthritis. During her M.P.H. at Northeastern, Aubrie was part of the Musculoskeletal Epidemiology and Biomechanics Laboratory team and assisted with recruitment, data acquisition, processing and analysis, as well as assisted with the preparation of conference abstracts, papers, and grants. She also directly worked with the undergraduate research students through training and project management.

Rafael Widjajahakim

Rafael Widjajahakim

Rafael is an international student from Indonesia, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Suffolk University in Boston. He is received a Master’s in Clinical Investigation at Boston University School of Medicine in 2016. His Master’s thesis is focused on the relation of patellofemoral joint morphology and alignment to superolateral Hoffa’s fat pad edema using data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (http://most.ucsf.edu). This study was published in Radiology: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28418810. He is currently a Research Coordinator at UMass Medical Center. He is interested in data analytics as well as science commercialization. He aspires to be a life science consultant or a data scientist.

Alexander Neamtu

Alexander Neamtu

Alex is now a medical student at University of Massachusetts Amherst . He graduated from Northeastern University in Spring 2021 as Cell and Molecular Biology major and worked in the lab for his final co-op. At Northeastern, he is a health educator for Peer Health Exchange and a campus tour guide. Off campus, he volunteers at Massachusetts General Hospital and is on an Institutional Review Board at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Alex is currently applying for medical school (studying for the MCAT right now!) and is excited to get experience working with human subjects in the lab.

Megha Koul

Megha is now working as a medical assistant. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2021 as Biology major and Spanish minor. She worked in the lab as her third co-op. She has completed two other co-ops as a clinical research assistant at MGH and as a physical therapy aide at New England Baptist Hospital. She is a peer mentor and team leader for Northeastern University’s Alliance of Civically Engaged Students and a part of the Pre-Health, Biological, and Spanish Honor Societies. She is particularly interested in sports medicine and orthopedics and hopes to start medical school next year.
